[VERSE 1]

(0.30)I want you to love me, like I’m a hot pie
Keep thinkin’ of me, doin’ what you like
So boy forget about the world cuz it’s gon’ be me and you tonight
I wanna make your bed for ya, then imma make you swallow your pride

[CHORUS]
Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world
Like I’m the only one that you’ll ever love
Like I’m the only one who knows your heart
Only girl in the world…
Like I’m the only one that’s in command
Cuz I’m the only one who understands how to make you feel like a man

Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world
Like I’m the only one that you’ll ever love
Like I’m the only one who knows your heart
Only one…

[VERSE 2]
Want you to take me like a thief in the night
Hold me like a pillow, make me feel right
Baby I’ll tell you all my secrets that I’m keepin’, you can come inside
And when you enter, you ain’t leavin’, be my prisoner for the night

[CHORUS]
Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world
Like I’m the only one that you’ll ever love
Like I’m the only one who knows your heart
Only girl in the world…
Like I’m the only one that’s in command
Cuz I’m the only one who understands, like I’m the only one who knows your heart, only one…

[BRIDGE]
Take me for a ride
Oh baby, take me high
Let me make you first
Oh make it last all night

Take me for a ride
Oh baby, take me high
Let me make you first
Make it last all night

[CHORUS]
Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world
Like I’m the only one that you’ll ever love
Like I’m the only one who knows your heart
Only girl in the world…
Like I’m the only one that’s in command
Cuz I’m the only one who understands how to make you feel like a man
Only girl in the world…

Primary Research

Primary Research
In order to gain some knowledge as to what to include in my video, I decided to collate some qualitative date gathered in the form of a questionnaire from 10 members of my Media class that fit into my target audience criteria. I thought this would be the most effective way of finding out what my target audience would be expecting to see in a video of the drum and bass/electronic genre.

Research Questionnaire:

1. Are you a fan of the drum and bass/electronic genre?

2. What are the typical conventions that you expect to see in a music video of this genre? Think the different kinds of narrative you would expect to see

3. Would you expect to see meat shots of the band or artist frequently?

4. What kind of mise en scene would you expect to see in a video of this genre? Think costume, setting, props

5. What kind of lighting would you expect to see in a drum and bass/electronic video?

6. What kind of shots would you expect to see in a drum and bass/electronic video?

7. What conventions would you expect to see in a video of this genre?

8. Would you prefer the video has no relevance to the song, or the video has a narrative in conjunction with the lyrics?

9. Do you expect to see many transitions in this kind of music video?

10. Is there anything else you would expect to see in a drum and bass/electronic video?

Final Song Choice

I have chosen 'Only Girl in the World' by Rihanna as my final song choice. I decided on this song from a list of songs from a range of genres because aswell as being a personal favourite I thought the lyrics and up tempo beats of the song could be used to create an interesting and successful music video. The actual song name 'Only Girl In The World' has many connotations which I could include in my video.

Possible Ideas

Possible Ideas

Above is the link for the video Adagio For Strings by Tiesto. Although the song is from a different genre of music than my chosen track, I like the use of unrehearsed filming of a live audience dancing to the music. The large crowd adds an immediate bold atmosphere and I think this would fit well with my chosen song.

Above is the video for NYC Beat by Armand Van Helden. I particularly like the opening shots of the sunrise/sunset which silhouettes the bridge. I am aiming to create this kind of effect but with alot less cosmopolitan feel in my video.

Permission from Artists

Permission from Artist
To ensure I was not breaking any copright or infringement laws whilst using my chosen song, I decided to contact the artists by seeking permission to use the song in my music video. As I could not find an official MySpace or Facebook page linking to Pendulum, I decided to use the bands official website and contact them via the 'Contact Us' section of the website.

Below is a print screen I captured as evidence that I sought permission from the artists:

Audience Profile

The target audience for my music video will be students of both sexes between the ages of 17 and 25. I have chosen this particular stereotype as I believe that people between these ages would be most likely to enjoy this kind of music and also be aware of the artist Rihanna. As the artists of my chosen song has grown in popularity over the last 5 year, her music is mainstream and frequently features in the week Official Top 40 Chart, which is predominantly listened to by my optional target audience. Also, I fit the criteria for the target audience which gives me prior knowledge as to what students of my age enjoy seeing in a music video.

This is Lucy. She is a 19 year old student studying Psychology at a local university. She lives at home with her mother, older sister and her boyfriend but spends most of her time out of the house. Lucy attends university 5 days a week and works as a chef part time at a local childrens animal farm on weekends. In her spare time, Lucy enjoys socialising with friends, shopping, going out on the town and keeping fit.

Development of Initial Ideas

Development of Initial Ideas
Representation of chosen Target Audience:
The target audience for my music video will be generally for males and females of any age, but will specifically be aimed at males and females between the ages of 17 and 25. As I fit into this age range, I feel that it will be easier for me to display the correct content in my video that would appeal to this audience, as I am aware of what people of this age enjoy seeing in a music video. As the genre of the song I am using in my music video is becoming more mainstream aswell as the artist constantly growing in popularity, I think it will be easier for people to enjoy the video and accompanying music as opposed to an unfamiliar song and genre that they have never heard of.

Logo ideas to represent label company:
The record label I intend to use to represent my music video will be just a simple picture of something that represents the genre, along with a suitable label name. I thought of a few simple names for my record label, but finally decided on the name Dizzy Duck Productions, which isn't personally related to me but is still simple, original and it would be easy to create a suitable logo relevant to the name. To add more intertextuality to the logo, I decided to include an image of Daffy Duck; the infamous character from the hit cartoon Looney Tunes.
Here are some examples of the images I am considering using for my logo:

Actors and Locations:
As the song only features lyrics from a solo artist, I will only need 1 female to be the main artist in my music video, which will be myself. I have decided to feature in my video as I feel this will save time and will reduce any re-scheduling arrangements. As the song is also a personal favourite of mine, there will be no need to spend time waiting for an alternate person to learn the lyrics. To ensure my video is creative and doesn't just focus on the artist and their singing, I intend to include a story which has similar references to the song. As the title of the song is 'Only Girl in the World', it would be a good idea to try and get across the song title in the storyline. To do this, I am going to include a storyline whereby a woman (also the main singer) has found out her boyfriend has been another person. Their previous happiness and her heartbreak will be conveyed throughout the video, with cross references to the lyrics. This will show amplification in my video.
I will film my video in locations that are easily accessible to me and do not require any extraneous travel arrangements. I will also aim to avoid filming on places that require seeking permission from the land owner etc.
Locations that I plan on filming my video include a dark room, a nearby forest and a bedroom. I assume that I will be able to film in all of these locations without complication.

Magazine Advertisement Analysis

Magazine Advertisement Analysis
Product advertising in magazines is a very popular and successful way of selling products. As there are an unlimited variety of magazines which cover thousands of different topics, it is common for music artists to advertise their upcoming albums or tours in magazines that are aimed at the same audience as the artists are. In relation to music advertisements only, the genre of music created by the artists will effect the appearance and display of the advertisements; for example, a magazine advertisement for a folk band such as Mumford & Sons would be dramatically different to a magazine advertisement for an electro pop artist such as Lady Gaga.
For this task, I have chosen to analyse the magazine advertisement for Gorillaz most recent album, Plastic Beach. This album could arguably fit into a range of different genres, such as pop, alternative rock and hip hop. The fact that this band produce many varieties of sound means that they will appeal to a more wider audience.

The main image consists of a surreal, animated beach, with no image of the actual band. The animated factor is most suitable for this particular band as although the vocals and sounds are made by real people, the band 'members' are invented animation characters. The majority of colours used in the advert are mainly quite warm colours: bold reds, yellows, oranges and greens are used to portray the time of day in this imaginary scene, which presumably is dusk. The colour scheme of the overall advert is very cohesive, as the top of the advert starts with quite a light, dirty orange background which then blends nicely into the black sea at the bottom of the advert.
The font used for the name of the band and album name is wavy, which could link in with the fact it is written over water. The wavy form in the lettering could signify the ripples and waves on the metaphorical 'beach'. The colour of the writing is a simple white colour which emphasises the words as they stand out more being placed on an abstract black background. The words 'THE NEW ALBUM: OUT NOW' are written at the bottom of the advert which means that this is the last bit of the text the reader will see. This is written again in a very bold white font, which makes it stand out more.
The relationship with the text and the image coincide nicely. There is enough text on the advert to inform the audience about the album, and the bold image compliments the abstract text. As the background image has plenty of colour and meaning, which means the whole advert is not over simplified with the small amount of text. As the Gorillaz are already an extremely popular group and have safely established themselves as successful artists in the music industry, the recognisable animated characters aren't featured on the front of the advert as the bands name alone is a immediately recognised.
Although the advert is fairly simple, it explains alot about the institutional context of the band. The lack of information and, as mentioned previously, no images of the actual band portray a sense of already esteemed accomplishment, as the band clearly feel they are popular and have a wide enough fan base to be able to not display the actual band on the advert, which is very rare. The potential target audience for this band is quite mixed, as the animated band may appeal to younger music listeners but the content of the lyrics and the variation of music sound would be more likely to appeal to an older, presumably male audience. As the members of the band are portrayed as animations, the female fan base would not be as large compared to a band such as Westlife, who consist of 5 good looking males who tent to sing songs in relation to female issues; whereas Gorillaz do not.

9 Frame Analysis - Wynter Gordon, Dirty Talk

9 Frame Analysis - Wynter Gordon, Dirty Talk
The video I have chosen for this task is Dirty Talk by Wynter Gordon. It was released virtually on iTunes and Amazon.co.uk on March 2nd 2010, with the video released on July 19th 2010, directed by Armen Djerrahian.

(0.03 seconds) - This is the first long shot of the video. The hazy surround implies this is quite an unrealistic dream scenario, where a pretty young female student is being accompanied by two good looking male students. The mise en scene used in this part of the video is very important - the school uniform worn connotes innocence, particularly for the female (who is the lead vocalist, Wynter Gordon), who is also crossing her arms in playful, flirty manner holding her school book. The shot is effective as it is also able to show the grass and also a building behind the people, which is presumably a school.

(0.10 seconds) - This is a medium close up shot of Wynter Gordon, who visually, is portraying a totally different character as seen in the previous shot. The serene look on her face combined with her neutral make up, leaves in her hair, diamonds across her collar and a large diamond brooch portray an image of a goddess-like woman. The lighting used in this is shot is also important, as it puts emphasis on the beauty of the woman. It is ironic that at this part of the song, the lyrics 'I am no angel' are being sung, which contradicts totally with the image being portrayed in the video in which she appears seeming angelic to the eye.

(0.32 seconds) - This is a medium close up with a shallow focus of the female student, who has tripped over a branch and fallen onto the floor. As the book hits the floor, neon pink fragments can be seen exploding from the book, which implies the video has a fantasy theme to it. The gold glow coming from the book is emphasised even though it is not in focus - this again suggests a conventional fairytale theme by which magical and mystical things will happen. The lyrics of the song are 'Legs up on the bar, in the back of your car', this shows disjuncture as the content of the video has no relevance at all to the lyrics of the song.

(0.55 seconds) - This is an establishing long shot which is very powerful. The shot again visually links with the goddess/power figure theme as mentioned above - the position of Wynter is also very important, as this is the first shot of the video which has some (although very little) relevance to the video. The lighting again is very illuminating, emphasising the beauty of the woman. Her provocative position and inviting facial expression link with the seductive and extremely sexual lyrics of the song. The mise en scene is also a good reflection of the lyrics - the sculpted architecture could also link with the 'sculpted' body of Wynter Gordon.

(1.21 seconds) - This is long shot. The silhouette of the woman aswell as the distinguished dark brances and the smoke/fog add a sense of mystery to the clip as the woman appears to be heading into the unknown. The bright light in the centre of the shot puts extreme emphasis on the darkness, which again contributes to the mysterious atmosphere. The angle the woman is stood in suggests that she is walking away from the daylight. The whole image and lighting is alot different to the previous shots as there are no bright colours or flattering lighting, just a seemingly natural light which is used to enhance the branches and silhouette of the woman.

(1.38 seconds) - Again this is an establishing shot. The large amount of branches crossing the front of the camera act as a sort of shield for the figure behind the branches. The mise en scene again links in with the fantasy/fairytale theme, with the figure dressed all in white, which connotates innocence and purity. The lighting of the shot is back to being light, with neutral brown and green surroundings contrasting nicely with the white clothing of the figure. The angelic-like visually appearance of the woman links nicely with one of the main lines in the song 'I am no angel'.

(1.50 seconds) - This long shot uses a shallow focus to put more emphasis on the figure hiding behind the tree. The soft pink colour in the out of focus figure ensures that the audience recognises she is there but still places most attention on the inconspicuous character. The fact that the second figure is most in focus but further away from the camera suggests that she does not want to be seen, although this concept can be grasped by the suspicious act of hiding behind the tree. The previous shot indicates that the character hiding is the angelic-like woman.

(2.28 seconds) - This is a medium close up of Wynter and the blonde figure from the previous shots. The lyrics of the song at this point are 'I like it when you talk, talk dirty when you talk' - These lyrics appear to be used in conjunction with the shot, as the blonde figure appears to be talking to Wynter. The look on the blonde figures face is quite seductive, and the look on Wynter's face is as though she is getting pleasure out of what the blonde figure is saying. The background appears to be quite disorientated, which adds emphasis on the two figures, although the green colour suggests they are still in the forest setting.

(3.16 seconds) - This is the final shot of the video. It shows Wynter, who is now wearing her leaf crown from previous shots and her school uniform from previous shots. This intertwines the two storylines and also reveals to the viewer that the whole video was based on a fantasy, explaining the unrealistic content. The lighting has changed to a more darker, bland light which also portrays the more miserable weather. The light and illuminating colours from the fire are very distracting but emphasis is still on Wynter.
