9 Frame Analysis - Wynter Gordon, Dirty Talk

9 Frame Analysis - Wynter Gordon, Dirty Talk
The video I have chosen for this task is Dirty Talk by Wynter Gordon. It was released virtually on iTunes and Amazon.co.uk on March 2nd 2010, with the video released on July 19th 2010, directed by Armen Djerrahian.

(0.03 seconds) - This is the first long shot of the video. The hazy surround implies this is quite an unrealistic dream scenario, where a pretty young female student is being accompanied by two good looking male students. The mise en scene used in this part of the video is very important - the school uniform worn connotes innocence, particularly for the female (who is the lead vocalist, Wynter Gordon), who is also crossing her arms in playful, flirty manner holding her school book. The shot is effective as it is also able to show the grass and also a building behind the people, which is presumably a school.

(0.10 seconds) - This is a medium close up shot of Wynter Gordon, who visually, is portraying a totally different character as seen in the previous shot. The serene look on her face combined with her neutral make up, leaves in her hair, diamonds across her collar and a large diamond brooch portray an image of a goddess-like woman. The lighting used in this is shot is also important, as it puts emphasis on the beauty of the woman. It is ironic that at this part of the song, the lyrics 'I am no angel' are being sung, which contradicts totally with the image being portrayed in the video in which she appears seeming angelic to the eye.

(0.32 seconds) - This is a medium close up with a shallow focus of the female student, who has tripped over a branch and fallen onto the floor. As the book hits the floor, neon pink fragments can be seen exploding from the book, which implies the video has a fantasy theme to it. The gold glow coming from the book is emphasised even though it is not in focus - this again suggests a conventional fairytale theme by which magical and mystical things will happen. The lyrics of the song are 'Legs up on the bar, in the back of your car', this shows disjuncture as the content of the video has no relevance at all to the lyrics of the song.

(0.55 seconds) - This is an establishing long shot which is very powerful. The shot again visually links with the goddess/power figure theme as mentioned above - the position of Wynter is also very important, as this is the first shot of the video which has some (although very little) relevance to the video. The lighting again is very illuminating, emphasising the beauty of the woman. Her provocative position and inviting facial expression link with the seductive and extremely sexual lyrics of the song. The mise en scene is also a good reflection of the lyrics - the sculpted architecture could also link with the 'sculpted' body of Wynter Gordon.

(1.21 seconds) - This is long shot. The silhouette of the woman aswell as the distinguished dark brances and the smoke/fog add a sense of mystery to the clip as the woman appears to be heading into the unknown. The bright light in the centre of the shot puts extreme emphasis on the darkness, which again contributes to the mysterious atmosphere. The angle the woman is stood in suggests that she is walking away from the daylight. The whole image and lighting is alot different to the previous shots as there are no bright colours or flattering lighting, just a seemingly natural light which is used to enhance the branches and silhouette of the woman.

(1.38 seconds) - Again this is an establishing shot. The large amount of branches crossing the front of the camera act as a sort of shield for the figure behind the branches. The mise en scene again links in with the fantasy/fairytale theme, with the figure dressed all in white, which connotates innocence and purity. The lighting of the shot is back to being light, with neutral brown and green surroundings contrasting nicely with the white clothing of the figure. The angelic-like visually appearance of the woman links nicely with one of the main lines in the song 'I am no angel'.

(1.50 seconds) - This long shot uses a shallow focus to put more emphasis on the figure hiding behind the tree. The soft pink colour in the out of focus figure ensures that the audience recognises she is there but still places most attention on the inconspicuous character. The fact that the second figure is most in focus but further away from the camera suggests that she does not want to be seen, although this concept can be grasped by the suspicious act of hiding behind the tree. The previous shot indicates that the character hiding is the angelic-like woman.

(2.28 seconds) - This is a medium close up of Wynter and the blonde figure from the previous shots. The lyrics of the song at this point are 'I like it when you talk, talk dirty when you talk' - These lyrics appear to be used in conjunction with the shot, as the blonde figure appears to be talking to Wynter. The look on the blonde figures face is quite seductive, and the look on Wynter's face is as though she is getting pleasure out of what the blonde figure is saying. The background appears to be quite disorientated, which adds emphasis on the two figures, although the green colour suggests they are still in the forest setting.

(3.16 seconds) - This is the final shot of the video. It shows Wynter, who is now wearing her leaf crown from previous shots and her school uniform from previous shots. This intertwines the two storylines and also reveals to the viewer that the whole video was based on a fantasy, explaining the unrealistic content. The lighting has changed to a more darker, bland light which also portrays the more miserable weather. The light and illuminating colours from the fire are very distracting but emphasis is still on Wynter.
